Where the parties seek to protect from disclosure certain
communications made during the course of a transaction, pursuant to
a "joint defense agreement" that they entered in anticipation of the
lawsuit prior to finalizing their business negotiations, an in
camera inspection of the material must occur before determining
whether disclosure is compelled.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY PROF'L PEACE OFFICERS' ASS'N v. COUNTY OF LOS
ANGELES, No. B163710 (Cal. 2d App. Dist. February 11, 2004)
Defendant's failure to apply its "vacation pay cash-out" policy to
investigators on work-related disability leave violated neither
Labor Code section 4850 nor the employees' equal protection rights.
Application of the policy was exceptionally rare, and the
investigators were not compelled to forfeit their excess vacation
time.

Son was properly ordered removed from the custody of his mother, a
chronic paranoid schizophrenic, though she was improperly served and
was allowed no opportunity to be heard on the issue of the
appointment of a guardian ad litem; both errors were harmless.
